Explore Cowichan: Old Stone Butter Church
If you’re passing through the Mount Tzuhalem area, you may pass close to this remarkable old church but not realize it. It appears to be off Lemo Road, but that’s a private reserve street. Instead, pull off at roughly 1544 Tzuhalem Road. Maybe visit Google Earth to get your bearings first. Just south of the Lemo Road intersection, you’ll see a branch dirt road running parallel. Pull off and park there. At the south junction of the dirt road you’ll see a path going uphill. This leads to the church property. The church was built in 1870 but abandoned and left to deteriorate since 1880, and so is both quaint and forbidding all at once. It’s replacement, St. Ann’s Church, is located just up the road and notably charming in a completely different way.
